Book a LEGAL, Licensed Transportation Company
A quick guide for brides, parents, and planners to avoid illegal operators and verify a company in Michigan.
Why does MDOT Certified Matter?
Some companies advertise buses or limousines online that they don’t actually own or operate.
If you book with one of these operators and something goes wrong such as an accident, a breakdown, or an injury you have no way of knowing who’s really responsible for that vehicle’s maintenance, insurance, or safety record. MDOT certification exists so you’re not taking that risk. It confirms the company you’re booking is the company that actually owns, maintains, and insures the vehicle showing up for your event.
What are Signs of Illegal or Unsafe Operators?
A few warning signs tend to show up together. An operator who won’t let you see the actual vehicle in person before you book is one of the biggest red flags. Legitimate companies have nothing to hide.
Look for a current MDOT safety inspection sticker behind the driver’s door; if it’s missing, or if the sticker is missing a VIN or expiration date, that’s a problem. Be cautious of any company that’s vague about how their vehicles are inspected, since MDOT stickers are only issued by certified Level 5 Master Mechanics. state employees, not something a business can arrange privately. A company that won’t show you proof of commercial insurance or operating authority shouldn’t get your business. And if all you have is a cell phone number, no business address, cash-only payment, and no written contract, walk away.
What does a Legitimate Company Look Like?
A legitimate operator welcomes you to tour their vehicles on-site before you book. There’s no reason to hide the fleet from a paying customer.
Every vehicle carries a current, intact MDOT inspection sticker, with a VIN that matches the vehicle and an expiration date that hasn’t passed. The company is upfront about how those inspections work, since the stickers come from state-certified mechanics, not the business itself. They’ll readily provide proof of commercial insurance and operating authority when asked. And you’ll see the other signs of a real business: a clear written contract, professional communication, and an actual business address not just a phone number.
How do you Know if a Company is MDOT Verified?
Michigan makes this easy to check yourself. Go to the MDOT Authorized Carriers database and search the company’s exact name or USDOT number.
Once you find their entry, check the number of authorized vehicles listed and watch for any vehicles marked as unauthorized. That’s a red flag.
Match the USDOT number in the database against what the company has listed on their own website or paperwork to make sure they line up. If you’re still not sure after checking online, it’s always fair to ask to see a vehicle in person before you commit.
Can I Check MDOT Verification in Person?
Yes. And it only takes a minute. Look for the MDOT inspection sticker behind the driver’s door, confirm the VIN printed on the sticker matches the vehicle you’re actually looking at, and check that the expiration date is still valid.
If any of those three things don’t check out, that’s reason enough to ask more questions before you book.
What insurance and licensing should I ask about when booking a limo in Michigan?
Ask three things: Is the company MDOT certified with a current inspection sticker? Do they carry commercial liability insurance that meets Michigan’s minimum for passenger carriers? And are their drivers licensed, background-checked, and drug-tested?
A legitimate company will answer all three without hesitation and show you proof. If a company won’t show you an inspection sticker or insurance documentation, that’s your answer. Book somewhere else.
Rockstarz Limousine is fully licensed, MDOT certified, and commercially insured.
How much insurance does a Michigan limo company need to carry?
Michigan law requires limousine carriers to hold at least $1,000,000 in combined single-limit liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage.
That minimum increases with vehicle size. carriers operating larger vehicles are required to carry as much as $5,000,000 in coverage for buses with 16 or more passengers. Any company quoting you a ride in a party bus or motorcoach should be able to confirm they meet this threshold for the specific vehicle you’re booking.
Am I covered if the driver gets in an accident?
Yes, when you book with a properly insured carrier. Commercial liability insurance covers passengers in the vehicle, not just the driver or the vehicle itself.
This is one of the biggest reasons MDOT certification and proof of insurance matter. An uninsured or underinsured operator can leave you personally exposed if something goes wrong. Every Rockstarz vehicle is covered under our commercial policy for the full trip, start to finish.
Does a limo company need commercial insurance, or is personal auto insurance enough?
Personal auto insurance does not cover paid passenger transportation. Any company carrying passengers for hire in limos, party buses, or shuttles is legally required to carry commercial liability insurance specifically for that use.
A personal policy won’t pay out if something happens during a paid ride, which is exactly why MDOT certification and commercial coverage exist as separate requirements from ordinary car insurance.
What is a USDOT number, and why does a Michigan limo company need one?
A USDOT number is a unique identifier the state uses to track a carrier’s safety record, inspections, and authorized vehicles. Michigan requires it for any company operating limousines, party buses, or shuttles for hire. You can look up any company’s USDOT number on the MDOT Authorized Carriers database to confirm they’re currently authorized and see how many vehicles are registered under their name.
Rockstarz Limousine’s USDOT number is USDOT# 2537766. Feel free to look us up before you book!
Is Rockstarz Limousine MDOT certified?
Yes. Every vehicle in our fleet carries a current MDOT inspection sticker, issued by a state-certified Level 5 Master Mechanic. We’re a registered, authorized carrier, and you can verify us directly on the MDOT Authorized Carriers database using our USDOT number above.
Do Rockstarz drivers undergo background checks?
Yes. Our chauffeurs are drug-tested, professional drivers.
Does Rockstarz own its vehicles, or are they subcontracted out?
